Regulators Warn Against Recalled Weight-Loss Injections as Safety Concerns Grow in South Africa

South African health regulators have issued a strong warning to doctors, pharmacists and other health practitioners not to prescribe, dispense or keep stock of recalled Semaglutide and Tirzepatide products, amid growing concern that demand for weight-loss injections is outpacing safe medical oversight. The warning followed regulatory action involving products compounded by iDexis, with the South African Pharmacy Council, Health Professions Council of South Africa and SAHPRA stressing that continued use or dispensing could expose practitioners to disciplinary action and place patients at serious risk. Reuters reported that the recall followed a High Court interim order in a case brought by Novo Nordisk, which argued that unregistered Semaglutide products were being manufactured and sold unlawfully in South Africa’s fast-growing weight-loss market. The case highlights a wider public-health problem: while GLP-1-type medicines can be clinically valuable when properly prescribed and monitored, unsafe copies, unregistered products and casual weight-loss use can expose patients to uncertain dosing, contamination risks, poor follow-up and unmanaged side effects. The message from regulators is clear — weight-loss trends must not override medicine safety, legal supply chains or responsible prescribing, because a popular injection is still a powerful medical product that needs professional care.
