Hydrogen strategy: Rheinmetall Denel Munition (RDM) presents solutions for the production, storage, and transport of green hydrogen

“Today marks the beginning of a new era in the history of Rheinmetall Denel Munition” says Jan- Patrick Helmsen CEO of RDM. At the Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD) trade fair in South Africa, Rheinmetall Denel Munition(RDM), the biggest defence exporter in South Africa, launched South Africa`s first Green Hydrogen Mobile Solution, an innovative, turnkey, and module solution for generating, storing and transporting CO2-free hydrogen. The truck-based solution can guarantee climate-neutral security of energy supply for individual civilian and military applications, independent of an external power grid, even in undeveloped terrain. With this technology, RDM is not only expanding its civil business as part of its hydrogen strategy but is also taking the path to become an energy producer with its plant engineering capability. The concept is based on electrolysis technology, in which water molecules are split into the elements hydrogen and oxygen. The electricity required for this is generated using solar panels and is therefore CO2-free. The green hydrogen obtained in this way is gaseous, can be stored, and can therefore also be transported.

All the components of the system developed by RDM cannot only be stationary but also mobile to varying degrees. With a larger mobile system, such as a military hospital, the conversion of the solar power, the electrolysis, and the storage of the generated hydrogen take place in separate containers. However, all the necessary modules can also be concentrated in one container, which is supplemented by solar panels for power generation and a water supply, to further increase the flexible mobile application possibilities. The mobile production of green hydrogen can be used in industrial, military, and civil areas to supply heat and electricity. Any by-products such as oxygen can also be used or marketed. In principle, the stored hydrogen can either be stored and consumed directly on-site or transported to a destination, but it can also be stored at a remote location for later use.

The production quantity can be tailored to individual needs. A container holds up to 350 kg of hydrogen, enough to power 15 households for almost 10 days. The different systems, regardless of whether they are tent camps, hospitals, or stationary solutions, not only enable the production of green hydrogen as the energy source of the future but also self-sufficiency and the greatest possible mobility in terms of energy supply in undeveloped areas or for commercial applications outside of any power supply. “RDM as a chemical company wants to become an energy provider in the future. An energy supplier who aims to make South Africa cleaner and more sustainable with solar and green hydrogen and who wants to create more jobs in South Africa with the export of green hydrogen to the world” says Jan - Patrick Helmsen , CEO of RDM.

GESS Military- Field Hospital Solution

RDM’s goal is to be carbon neutral by 2035 and as part of our carbon neutral drive we are in process to replacing our entire combustion engine vehicle fleet of over 300 cars with e-cars and hybrid vehicles. In the beginning of July 2022, we introduced e-scooters, including a charging station, as well as two mini e-buses, which will be used for commuting on our Somerset West and Boskop sites. RDM is in the process of constructing its first solar PV farm at the Somerset West site and the same model will be replicated across all four RDM sites in South Africa. With this module solution, Rheinmetall is not only expanding its portfolio as a reliable energy partner but is also adding another component to its hydrogen strategy with this self-sufficient, individually mobile solution. The company now offers solutions for complete self-sufficiency through solar capacity and is a global supplier of green hydrogen and turnkey complete solutions as well as for large stationary H2 factories and mobile module solutions.
