Overview
Vasovagal syncope is a common cause of fainting due to sudden drops in heart rate and blood pressure, often triggered by stress or pain.
Symptoms
Lightheadedness or dizziness Nausea or sweating before fainting Temporary loss of consciousness Blurred vision or tunnel vision
Causes
Emotional stress or fear Prolonged standing or heat exposure Pain or injury
Diagnosis
Medical history and physical exam Blood pressure and heart rate monitoring Electrocardiogram (ECG) to rule out heart problems
Treatment
Avoiding triggers Increasing fluid and salt intake Physical counterpressure maneuvers (leg crossing, tensing muscles)
