Overview

Varicose veins are swollen, twisted veins visible under the skin, usually in the legs, due to weakened vein walls and valves.

Symptoms

Visible bulging veins Aching, heaviness, or cramps in legs Swelling in ankles or feet Skin changes or ulcers in severe cases

Causes

Weak or damaged vein valves Genetic predisposition Pregnancy or prolonged standing

Diagnosis

Physical examination Duplex ultrasound to assess blood flow and valve function

Treatment

Compression stockings Lifestyle changes: exercise, leg elevation Minimally invasive procedures: sclerotherapy, laser therapy Surgery for severe or complicated veins
