Overview

Stress fractures are small cracks in a bone caused by repetitive force or overuse, commonly affecting the weight-bearing bones of the lower leg and foot.

Symptoms

Localized pain that worsens with activity Swelling and tenderness at the site Bruising in some cases Pain that improves with rest Difficulty bearing weight on affected limb

Causes

Repetitive high-impact activities like running or jumping Sudden increase in training intensity Osteoporosis or weakened bones Improper footwear or training surfaces

Diagnosis

Physical examination of tenderness and swelling X-rays (sometimes may not show early stress fractures) MRI or bone scan for early detection

Treatment

Rest and avoiding weight-bearing activities Ice and elevation to reduce swelling Protective footwear or braces Gradual return to activity after healing Addressing underlying bone health issues
