Overview
Strep throat is a bacterial infection caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, leading to a sore, scratchy throat and sometimes fever or swollen lymph nodes.
Symptoms
Sore throat and pain when swallowing Red and swollen tonsils, sometimes with white patches Fever Swollen lymph nodes in the neck Headache or nausea
Causes
Infection with Streptococcus bacteria Close contact with infected individuals Touching contaminated surfaces and then touching the mouth or nose
Diagnosis
Rapid strep test from throat swab Throat culture for confirmation Physical examination of the throat and lymph nodes
Treatment
Antibiotics, usually penicillin or amoxicillin Pain relief with acetaminophen or NSAIDs Rest and adequate hydration Warm salt water gargles to soothe throat
