Overview
Spinal cord injury (SCI) occurs when the spinal cord is damaged, resulting in loss of function such as mobility or sensation below the site of injury.
Symptoms
Partial or complete loss of movement Loss of sensation, including touch, temperature, or pain Loss of bowel or bladder control Spasms or exaggerated reflexes Pain or intense stinging sensations caused by nerve damage
Causes
Trauma from accidents, falls, or sports injuries Medical conditions such as tumors, infections, or degenerative diseases
Diagnosis
Physical and neurological examination Imaging: MRI or CT scan to evaluate spinal cord and vertebrae Assessment of injury severity and level of function loss
Treatment
Immobilization and surgery to stabilize the spine Medications to reduce inflammation and prevent further injury Physical and occupational therapy for rehabilitation Assistive devices to improve mobility and independence
