Overview

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is a condition where excessive bacteria grow in the small intestine, leading to digestive issues and nutrient malabsorption.

Symptoms

Bloating and abdominal distension Diarrhea or constipation Gas and belching Abdominal pain or cramping Unintended weight loss

Causes

Impaired intestinal motility Anatomical abnormalities of the gut Chronic conditions like diabetes or Crohn’s disease Previous surgeries affecting the small intestine

Diagnosis

Breath tests for hydrogen or methane Small intestine aspirate and culture (rarely) Evaluation of underlying causes

Treatment

Antibiotics to reduce bacterial overgrowth Dietary changes such as low FODMAP diet Probiotics in some cases Treatment of underlying conditions
