Overview

Sleepwalking , also called somnambulism, is a disorder that causes a person to walk or perform complex behaviors while asleep, usually during deep sleep.

Symptoms

Sitting up in bed or walking around while asleep Blank stare and unresponsiveness Confused behavior upon waking Difficulty waking the person Occasional mumbling or talking during episodes

Causes

Genetic predisposition Sleep deprivation or irregular sleep schedules Stress and anxiety Certain medications or alcohol

Diagnosis

Medical and sleep history Observation during sleep studies if necessary Rule out other sleep disorders or medical conditions
