Overview

Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that often develops during childhood or adolescence. Mild cases may not require treatment, while severe curves may need bracing or surgery.

Symptoms

Uneven shoulders or hips Visible curve in the spine Back pain or discomfort Difficulty breathing in severe cases

Causes

Idiopathic (most common, unknown cause) Congenital spinal deformities Neuromuscular conditions

Diagnosis

Physical examination X-rays of the spine Observation of growth patterns in children

Treatment

Bracing to prevent worsening of curve Physical therapy to strengthen muscles Surgery for severe cases (spinal fusion) Regular monitoring of curvature progression
