Overview

Reflux oesophagitis is inflammation of the oesophagus due to acid reflux (GERD), causing heartburn and irritation.

Symptoms

Heartburn and acid regurgitation Chest discomfort after meals or when lying Difficulty or pain on swallowing Chronic cough, hoarseness

Causes

Lower oesophageal sphincter dysfunction Hiatus hernia, obesity, pregnancy Trigger foods, smoking, alcohol

Diagnosis

Clinical history; response to acid suppression Endoscopy for alarm symptoms or persistent cases pH monitoring or manometry if needed

Treatment

Lifestyle: weight loss, elevate head of bed, avoid triggers PPIs or H2 blockers Antireflux surgery (e.g., fundoplication) for refractory cases
