Overview
Rectal bleeding refers to blood passing from the rectum, ranging from small streaks on tissue to heavier bleeding.
Symptoms
Bright red blood on stool or tissue Dark or maroon stools (higher bleeding) Anal pain or itching (if fissures/haemorrhoids) Dizziness or weakness with significant blood loss
Causes
Haemorrhoids, anal fissures Diverticular disease, inflammatory bowel disease Colorectal polyps or cancer Infections, ischaemic colitis
Diagnosis
History, examination, digital rectal exam Proctoscopy/sigmoidoscopy/colonoscopy Blood tests for anaemia and inflammation
Treatment
Treat underlying cause (e.g., fibre, topical agents for haemorrhoids; fissure care) Endoscopic therapy for active bleeding when needed Surgery in selected cases Urgent care for heavy or ongoing bleeding
