Overview
Pertussis , also called whooping cough, is a highly contagious respiratory infection caused by Bordetella pertussis bacteria.
Symptoms
Severe coughing fits followed by a “whooping” sound Vomiting after coughing Runny nose and mild fever Fatigue
Causes
Infection with Bordetella pertussis bacteria Spread through respiratory droplets from coughs or sneezes
Diagnosis
Medical history and symptom evaluation Throat or nasal swab for bacterial culture Blood tests in some cases
Treatment
Antibiotics to reduce infection Supportive care for hydration and rest Hospitalization for severe cases, especially in infants
