Overview

Overactive bladder is a condition characterized by a sudden, uncontrollable urge to urinate, often accompanied by frequent urination and nocturia.

Symptoms

Urgent need to urinate Frequent urination (more than 8 times a day) Nocturia – waking at night to urinate Involuntary urine leakage (urge incontinence)

Causes

Overactivity of bladder muscles Nerve damage due to diabetes, stroke, or spinal injuries Urinary tract infections Enlarged prostate in men

Diagnosis

Medical history and symptom evaluation Urinalysis to rule out infection Bladder diary recording frequency and volume Urodynamic studies if needed

Treatment

Bladder training and pelvic floor exercises Medications to relax bladder muscles Lifestyle changes, including fluid management Surgical interventions in severe cases
