Otitis media is an infection or inflammation of the middle ear, commonly seen in children and sometimes associated with fluid buildup.
Symptoms
Ear pain and discomfort Fluid drainage from the ear Fever Hearing loss or muffled hearing Irritability or difficulty sleeping in children
Causes
Bacterial or viral infections Colds, allergies, or sinus infections Eustachian tube dysfunction Exposure to cigarette smoke or environmental irritants
Diagnosis
Physical examination with otoscope Assessment of fluid in the middle ear Hearing tests if needed Medical history and symptom review
Treatment
Antibiotics if bacterial infection is suspected Pain relief with analgesics or anti-inflammatory drugs Drainage procedures for recurrent fluid buildup Observation in mild cases as many infections resolve spontaneously
