Overview
Neisseria meningitidis (meningococcal disease) is a serious bacterial infection that can cause meningitis and bloodstream infections (sepsis).
Symptoms
Severe headache and stiff neck Fever and chills Vomiting and nausea Rash of small, dark-purple spots Fatigue and confusion
Causes
Bacterial infection with Neisseria meningitidis Close contact with an infected person Respiratory droplets spread in crowded environments
Diagnosis
Blood tests and culture Lumbar puncture to test cerebrospinal fluid PCR tests to identify bacterial DNA
Treatment
Prompt intravenous antibiotics Supportive care for complications (ICU if needed) Vaccination to prevent meningococcal infections
