Overview
Necrotising fasciitis is a rare but serious bacterial infection that destroys skin, fat, and the tissue covering the muscles.
Symptoms
Severe pain and swelling, often rapidly spreading Red or purplish skin that may turn black Fever, chills, and fatigue Blisters or ulcers on the affected area
Causes
Infection with bacteria such as Group A Streptococcus Open cuts, burns, or surgical wounds Weakened immune system or chronic illnesses
Diagnosis
Physical examination and medical history Blood tests for infection and inflammation Imaging studies (MRI or CT scan) to assess tissue damage Sample culture from affected tissue
Treatment
Immediate intravenous antibiotics Surgical removal of infected tissue Supportive care in ICU if severe Hyperbaric oxygen therapy in some cases
