Overview

Meniscus tear is a common knee injury involving a tear in the cartilage (meniscus) that cushions the knee joint, often caused by twisting or direct impact.

Symptoms

Pain along the knee joint Swelling and stiffness Locking or catching of the knee Difficulty bending or straightening the knee Feeling of instability

Causes

Sudden twisting or pivoting motions Sports injuries Degeneration from aging Direct impact to the knee

Diagnosis

Physical examination MRI scan to assess cartilage damage X-ray to rule out bone injuries

Treatment

Rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) Physical therapy to strengthen the knee Surgery (meniscectomy or repair) if severe Pain relief with NSAIDs
