Overview
Lymphoedema is swelling caused by a buildup of lymph fluid, often in the arms or legs, due to impaired lymphatic system function.
Symptoms
Swelling in arms, legs, or other areas Heaviness or tightness in affected limb Restricted range of motion Recurring infections in the affected area Hardening or thickening of the skin
Causes
Primary lymphatic system abnormalities (congenital) Secondary causes: surgery, radiation, infection, or cancer
Diagnosis
Physical examination Medical history review Imaging: lymphoscintigraphy, MRI, or CT scan if needed
Treatment
Compression garments Manual lymph drainage (specialized massage) Exercise to improve lymph flow Skin care to prevent infections Surgery in select cases
