Overview

Low blood pressure (hypotension) is a condition in which blood pressure is lower than normal, potentially causing dizziness, fainting, or shock in severe cases.

Symptoms

Dizziness or lightheadedness Fainting Blurred vision Nausea Fatigue and lack of concentration

Causes

Dehydration Heart problems Endocrine disorders Severe infection (septicemia) Medications such as diuretics or beta-blockers

Diagnosis

Blood pressure measurement in different positions Blood tests to check for underlying causes Electrocardiogram (ECG) or heart tests if needed

Treatment

Address underlying cause Increase fluid and salt intake (if appropriate) Medications in some cases Lifestyle adjustments such as avoiding sudden standing
