Overview
Leukoplakia is a condition in which thickened, white patches form on the mucous membranes of the mouth, tongue, or gums, which may be precancerous.
Symptoms
White or gray patches in the mouth or on the tongue Thickened, slightly raised lesions Patches that cannot be rubbed off Mild discomfort or sensitivity in some cases
Causes
Tobacco use (smoking or chewing) Chronic irritation from rough teeth or dental appliances Alcohol consumption Weakened immune system
Diagnosis
Visual inspection by a dentist or doctor Biopsy of the lesion to rule out cancer
Treatment
Eliminating the source of irritation Regular monitoring for any changes Surgical removal if lesions are precancerous or persistent Stopping tobacco and alcohol use
