Overview
Legionnaires' disease is a severe form of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria, often linked to contaminated water systems.
Symptoms
High fever and chills Cough, sometimes with mucus or blood Shortness of breath Muscle aches and fatigue Headache and confusion
Causes
Inhalation of water droplets containing Legionella bacteria Exposure in air conditioning systems, hot tubs, or plumbing systems Underlying health conditions increasing susceptibility
Diagnosis
Chest X-ray to detect pneumonia Urine antigen test for Legionella Blood or sputum cultures
Treatment
Antibiotic therapy (macrolides or fluoroquinolones) Supportive care, including oxygen if needed Hospitalization in severe cases Hydration and rest
