Overview
Leg ulcer is an open sore on the leg that takes a long time to heal, often caused by poor circulation, infection, or underlying medical conditions.
Symptoms
Open sore or wound, often on the lower leg or ankle Swelling or redness around the ulcer Pain or tenderness Discharge or foul odor if infected Skin changes such as thickening or discoloration
Causes
Poor blood circulation (venous or arterial) Diabetes or neuropathy Infections Pressure injuries or trauma
Diagnosis
Physical examination of the ulcer Assessment of circulation and underlying conditions Swab for bacterial culture if infection is suspected Imaging tests for severe or non-healing ulcers
Treatment
Cleaning and dressing the wound regularly Antibiotics if infection is present Compression therapy for venous ulcers Treatment of underlying causes (e.g., diabetes, poor circulation) Surgery in severe cases to promote healing
