Overview
Keloid scars are thick, raised scars that grow beyond the original wound, caused by an overproduction of collagen during healing.
Symptoms
Raised, firm, and shiny scar tissue Itching or tenderness Enlarged scar extending beyond wound edges Discoloration (red, purple, or darker than surrounding skin)
Causes
Excessive collagen formation during wound healing Genetic predisposition Skin trauma, surgery, burns, or piercings
Diagnosis
Physical examination of the scar Medical history and wound assessment Biopsy in uncertain cases
Treatment
Silicone sheets or gels Corticosteroid injections Laser therapy Surgical removal (with caution due to recurrence) Cryotherapy or radiation in select cases
