Overview

Iron deficiency anaemia occurs when the body lacks enough iron to produce sufficient healthy red blood cells, causing fatigue and weakness.

Symptoms

Fatigue and weakness Pale skin and lips Shortness of breath Dizziness or lightheadedness Cold hands and feet

Causes

Insufficient dietary iron intake Blood loss from menstruation or gastrointestinal bleeding Inability to absorb iron (e.g., celiac disease) Increased iron needs (pregnancy, growth)

Diagnosis

Complete blood count (CBC) Serum ferritin and iron levels Physical examination and history of blood loss

Treatment

Iron supplements orally or intravenously Diet rich in iron (red meat, beans, leafy greens) Treating underlying causes of blood loss
