Overview

Ingrown toenail occurs when the edge of a toenail grows into the surrounding skin, causing pain, swelling, and sometimes infection.

Symptoms

Pain and tenderness along one or both sides of the toenail Redness and swelling around the nail Pus or drainage if infection occurs Difficulty wearing shoes due to pain

Causes

Improper nail trimming (cutting nails too short or rounded) Ill-fitting footwear Toe injury Genetic predisposition to curved nails

Diagnosis

Physical examination of the affected toe Review of medical history X-ray if severe infection or bone involvement is suspected

Treatment

Soaking the foot in warm water Proper nail trimming techniques Topical or oral antibiotics if infected Partial nail removal or surgery in severe cases
