Overview
Incontinence (bowel) is the inability to control bowel movements, causing unexpected leakage of stool.
Symptoms
Unexpected leakage of stool or mucus Urgency to pass stools Inability to reach the toilet in time Constipation or diarrhoea alongside incontinence
Causes
Muscle or nerve damage from surgery, childbirth, or injury Chronic constipation or diarrhoea Haemorrhoids or rectal prolapse Neurological conditions (e.g., stroke, multiple sclerosis)
Diagnosis
Physical examination and medical history Stool tests Anorectal manometry Imaging scans (e.g., MRI, CT) if needed
Treatment
Dietary adjustments and fiber supplements Medications to treat constipation or diarrhoea Pelvic floor exercises and biofeedback Surgery in severe cases
