Overview

Hypotension , or low blood pressure, occurs when blood pressure falls below normal levels, potentially causing dizziness, fainting, and inadequate blood flow to organs.

Symptoms

Dizziness or lightheadedness Fainting Blurred vision Fatigue Shock in severe cases

Causes

Dehydration Heart problems (bradycardia, heart failure) Endocrine disorders (adrenal insufficiency, hypothyroidism) Severe infections (septicemia) Medications such as diuretics or beta-blockers

Diagnosis

Blood pressure monitoring Blood tests to check for infections or electrolyte imbalances Electrocardiogram (ECG) for heart conditions

Treatment

Increase fluid and salt intake if appropriate Adjust or change medications causing low blood pressure Treat underlying medical conditions Compression stockings for chronic hypotension

Complications

Shock and organ damage in severe cases Falls and injuries due to fainting Reduced oxygen supply to vital organs

Prevention

Stay hydrated Regular monitoring if at risk Manage underlying conditions appropriately
