Overview

Growing pains are common, harmless aches or pains in the legs of children, usually occurring in the evening or at night. They are not associated with growth abnormalities or disease.

Symptoms

Aching or throbbing pain in the legs, often in calves, shins, or behind knees Usually occurs at night and may wake the child from sleep Children are often pain-free during the day No swelling, redness, or tenderness of joints

Causes

Exact cause unknown May be related to increased activity during the day Possible minor muscle fatigue or growth-related changes

Diagnosis

Clinical history and physical examination Rule out other causes of leg pain (injury, infection, inflammatory disorders)

Treatment

Gentle massage or stretching of affected muscles Pain relief with paracetamol or ibuprofen if necessary Warm baths or heating pads to soothe muscles

Complications

Usually none, self-limiting condition

Prevention

Maintain regular physical activity and stretching Ensure supportive footwear
