Overview
Gangrene is the death of body tissue due to lack of blood flow or a severe bacterial infection. It commonly affects extremities such as toes, fingers, or limbs.
Symptoms
Discoloration of skin (black, blue, or green) Swelling or numbness Foul-smelling discharge Severe pain in the affected area
Causes
Poor blood circulation due to diabetes or atherosclerosis Severe injury or trauma Infections caused by bacteria such as Clostridium
Diagnosis
Physical examination Blood tests for infection Imaging tests to determine extent of tissue death
Treatment
Immediate antibiotics for infection Surgery to remove dead tissue (debridement) Amputation in severe cases Hyperbaric oxygen therapy in some cases
Complications
Sepsis (life-threatening infection) Loss of limb Death if untreated

Manage diabetes and vascular diseases Prompt treatment of infections and wounds Maintain good hygiene and protect extremities
