Overview
Erythema nodosum is an inflammatory condition characterized by tender red nodules, usually on the shins, often triggered by infections, medications, or autoimmune conditions.
Symptoms
Painful red or purple nodules, typically on the front of the legs Fever and fatigue in some cases Joint pain or swelling
Causes
Infections: streptococcal infections, tuberculosis Medications: antibiotics, oral contraceptives Autoimmune conditions: sarcoidosis, inflammatory bowel disease
Diagnosis
Clinical examination of the nodules Blood tests for inflammation Throat swabs or imaging if underlying cause suspected
Treatment
Treat underlying cause Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for pain Rest and elevation of affected limbs
Complications
Rare chronic nodules Persistent pain or discomfort
Prevention
Prompt treatment of infections Avoid triggers such as known medications if possible
