Erythema multiforme is a skin reaction that causes red, target-shaped lesions, often triggered by infections or medications.
Symptoms
Red or purple target-shaped skin lesions Itching or burning sensation Blisters or ulcers in severe cases Possible mild fever or malaise
Causes
Viral infections (e.g., herpes simplex) Bacterial infections Medications such as antibiotics or anti-seizure drugs
Diagnosis
Clinical examination of skin lesions Skin biopsy if needed Review of recent medications and infections
Treatment
Treat underlying infection or stop causative medication Topical corticosteroids or oral medications for inflammation Pain relief and supportive skin care
Complications
Severe skin blistering or infection Rare progression to Stevens-Johnson syndrome
