Overview

Varicose eczema is a skin condition that occurs on the lower legs due to poor circulation, usually associated with varicose veins. It causes inflammation, itching, and scaling.

Symptoms

Red, itchy, and scaly skin on lower legs Swelling or heaviness in the legs Darkening or thickening of the skin Discomfort or pain

Causes

Chronic venous insufficiency and varicose veins Fluid leakage from veins causing skin irritation Repeated scratching or minor injuries

Diagnosis

Physical examination of legs and veins Ultrasound to assess vein function Medical history review

Treatment

Compression stockings to improve circulation Topical corticosteroids for inflammation Moisturizers to reduce dryness and itching Address underlying varicose veins surgically if needed

Complications

Leg ulcers or infections Skin discoloration and thickening Chronic itching and discomfort

Prevention

Regular exercise and leg elevation Maintain a healthy weight Use compression stockings if prone to varicose veins
