Overview
Ectropion is a condition where the lower eyelid turns outward, exposing the inner eyelid and causing irritation, dryness, or tearing.
Symptoms
Visible outward turning of the lower eyelid Excessive tearing or watery eyes Eye irritation, redness, or sensitivity to light Crusting of eyelids
Causes
Aging and weakening of eyelid muscles Scarring from injury, burns, or surgery Congenital malformations Paralysis of facial muscles (e.g., Bell’s palsy)
Diagnosis
Eye examination by an ophthalmologist Evaluation of eyelid structure and function Assessment of underlying causes
Treatment
Lubricating eye drops or ointments Surgical correction to tighten or reposition eyelid Treatment of underlying conditions causing ectropion
Complications
