Overview
Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection causing flu-like illness, and occasionally develops into severe dengue, which can be life-threatening.
Symptoms
High fever Severe headache Pain behind the eyes Muscle and joint pain Skin rash Nausea and vomiting
Causes
Infection with dengue virus transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes
Diagnosis
Blood tests for dengue virus or antibodies Assessment of platelet count and hematocrit
Treatment
Supportive care with fluids and rest Pain relief (avoid aspirin or NSAIDs) Hospitalization in severe cases for monitoring
Complications
Severe dengue (dengue hemorrhagic fever) Shock and organ failure Death in rare severe cases
Prevention
