Overview

Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that causes intestinal infection called cyclosporiasis. It is usually transmitted through contaminated food or water.

Symptoms

Watery diarrhoea Loss of appetite Weight loss Bloating and gas Nausea and vomiting Fatigue

Causes

Ingestion of Cyclospora oocysts through contaminated food or water Poor hygiene during food handling

Diagnosis

Stool tests to detect Cyclospora oocysts Medical history including recent travel or food intake

Treatment

Prescription antibiotics (e.g., trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole) Hydration to prevent dehydration Symptom management

Complications

Severe diarrhoea leading to dehydration Weight loss and weakness in prolonged cases

Prevention

Drink safe, treated water Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly Practice proper hygiene in food handling
