Overview
Contact dermatitis is a skin reaction caused by direct contact with an irritant or allergen. It results in redness, itching, and sometimes blistering of the skin.
Symptoms
Red, itchy rash Dry, cracked, or scaly skin Swelling Blisters that may ooze
Causes
Irritants (soaps, detergents, chemicals) Allergens (nickel, fragrances, latex, plants like poison ivy) Prolonged exposure to water or certain substances
Diagnosis
Medical history and symptom review Physical examination Patch testing for allergens
Treatment
Avoidance of the triggering substance Topical corticosteroid creams Moisturisers to restore skin barrier Oral antihistamines for itching
Complications
Secondary skin infections Chronic skin thickening from repeated scratching
Prevention
Identify and avoid known irritants or allergens Wear protective gloves/clothing when needed Use mild, fragrance-free skin products
