Overview
Breast abscess is a painful collection of pus within the breast tissue, usually caused by a bacterial infection. It commonly occurs in breastfeeding women but can affect others as well.
Causes
Bacterial infection, often Staphylococcus aureus Blocked milk ducts Poor breastfeeding techniques or cracked nipples Weakened immune system
Signs and Symptoms
Painful, swollen lump in the breast Redness and warmth over the affected area Fever and general malaise Discharge from the nipple in some cases Breast tenderness
Diagnosis
Clinical examination of the breast Ultrasound to confirm abscess and its size Sample of pus for culture to identify the bacteria
Treatment and Management
Antibiotic therapy to treat the infection Needle aspiration or surgical drainage of the abscess Pain management with analgesics Continued breastfeeding or pumping to maintain milk flow if possible Good hygiene and proper breast care to prevent recurrence
Prevention
Proper breastfeeding techniques Regularly emptying the breasts during breastfeeding Prompt treatment of any mastitis or nipple cracks Maintaining overall good hygiene and breast care
