Overview
Avian flu , also known as bird flu, is an infectious viral disease that primarily affects birds but can occasionally infect humans. Certain strains, like H5N1, can be severe and pose public health risks.
Causes
Infection by influenza A viruses, commonly H5N1 and H7N9 Direct or indirect contact with infected birds, their droppings, or contaminated surfaces Consumption of undercooked poultry or eggs from infected birds
Symptoms
Fever and chills Cough, sore throat, and runny nose Muscle aches and fatigue Eye infections (conjunctivitis) in some cases Severe cases can lead to pneumonia or respiratory failure
Diagnosis
Medical history and exposure assessment Laboratory tests on respiratory samples to detect influenza A virus Blood tests to check for viral antibodies
Treatment
Antiviral medications, such as oseltamivir, if started early Supportive care, including fluids and oxygen therapy Hospitalization for severe cases
Prevention
Avoid contact with sick or dead birds Practice good hand hygiene after handling poultry Cook poultry and eggs thoroughly Vaccination for high-risk populations where available Biosecurity measures in poultry farms
