Overview

Alcohol misuse refers to drinking in a way that causes harm to health, relationships, or daily life. It includes excessive drinking, binge drinking, or dependency on alcohol.

Symptoms

Drinking more or for longer than intended Inability to cut down or stop drinking Craving alcohol Neglecting responsibilities at work, school, or home Social or interpersonal problems related to drinking Withdrawal symptoms when not drinking

Causes

Alcohol misuse is influenced by a combination of factors:

Genetic predisposition Environmental and social influences Mental health disorders such as depression or anxiety Early exposure to alcohol

Diagnosis

Medical history and physical examination Screening questionnaires (e.g., AUDIT, CAGE) Assessment of drinking patterns and related problems Laboratory tests to check for organ damage

Treatment

Behavioral therapies, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) Support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) Medications to reduce cravings or maintain abstinence Detoxification under medical supervision for severe dependence
