World Obesity Day, observed annually on 4 March, has once again drawn international attention to the growing global obesity crisis and its strong links to chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers. Health organizations worldwide are using the day to highlight obesity as a complex medical condition influenced by biological, environmental, and social factors, rather than simply lifestyle choices. The 2026 campaign calls for stronger health systems, prevention strategies and public policies to address the rising burden of obesity, which now affects over one billion people globally and is projected to impact nearly half of the world's population by 2035 if current trends continue.
