The World Health Organization (WHO) has released its latest influenza vaccine recommendations for the 2026-27 northern hemisphere season, guiding manufacturers and public health programmes on the most relevant viral strains to include in seasonal shots. Each year, the WHO's Global Influenza Programme reviews circulating influenza viruses - including influenza A and B subtypes - and uses global surveillance data to select vaccine components most likely to match those expected to circulate in the coming season, with the goal of enhancing vaccine effectiveness and reducing the burden of flu-related illness, hospitalisations and deaths. The updated guidance emphasises the importance of vaccination for vulnerable groups such as older adults, young children, pregnant individuals and people with chronic health conditions, supporting global efforts to control seasonal influenza through targeted immunisation strategies.
