Visceral Fat Loss May Protect Metabolic Health for a Decade, Even After Weight Regain

New long-term research from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev suggests that losing visceral fat - the deep belly fat stored around internal organs - may leave a lasting "metabolic legacy" that continues to protect health years after a lifestyle intervention ends. Using MRI data from 366 participants followed for up to 10 years, researchers found that although average body weight eventually returned to baseline, some abdominal fat reductions remained, and every 10% reduction in visceral fat achieved during the original diet-and-physical-activity intervention was linked to about a 28% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes during long-term follow-up. The findings, published in Circulation, challenge the idea that weight regain means complete failure, showing that the body may retain important cardiometabolic benefits even when the scale moves back up. This is especially important for obesity care because visceral fat is more dangerous than fat under the skin, as it is closely tied to insulin resistance, inflammation, metabolic syndrome and heart-disease risk. The study's message is practical and hopeful: health should not be judged only by kilograms lost, because reducing harmful internal fat through healthier eating, movement and sustained lifestyle change may leave behind protection that lasts far longer than a diet itself.
