Teen Vaping & Rapidly Rising Depression Rates
In recent years, the soft crackle of a vape pen has become one of the clearest warning signs in adolescent health. Research now shows a strong link between teen vaping and higher rates of depression and anxiety. In a survey of more than 2 500 young people, those who vaped nicotine or THC were far more likely to report anxiety, while over half reported symptoms of depression-compared to only a quarter of those who didn’t vape.

Many teens believe vaping helps them cope with stress or social discomfort, yet the evidence suggests the opposite. The more they vape, the worse their mood becomes. Nearly three in ten teens who use both nicotine and THC reported suicidal thoughts in the past year, far exceeding their non-vaping peers. This forms a troubling cycle: a distressed teen vapes to cope, becomes more dependent, feels worse, and the distress deepens-at a time when the adolescent brain is especially vulnerable.

Although most studies come from the US and Europe, the message is global. South African teens face intense academic pressure, unemployment, social media stress and safety concerns-conditions that make vaping both tempting and dangerous. International data should serve as an early warning for local schools, parents and clinicians.

Part of the solution lies in integrating vaping questions into mental-health screenings and educating teens about the emotional risks, not just the physical ones. Prevention must also address the root causes: stress, anxiety, loneliness and peer pressure.

The research may still be evolving, but one truth is already clear. When teenagers reach for a vape pen, they may be reaching for short-term comfort at the cost of long-term emotional wellbeing.
