South African Vaccine Science Takes the Global Stage as Wits Professor Wins Major Infectious-Disease Honour

South African vaccinologist and public-health leader Professor Shabir A. Madhi has been named the 2026 recipient of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases Maxwell Finland Award for Scientific Achievement, one of the world's leading honours in infectious diseases and vaccinology. Madhi, who serves as Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand, is being recognised for decades of vaccine research that has shaped global immunisation policy and strengthened disease-prevention strategies, especially in high-burden African settings. His work has helped generate critical evidence for vaccines against major childhood and respiratory diseases, including pneumococcal disease, influenza, RSV, rotavirus and COVID-19, while also advancing research into maternal immunisation and equitable vaccine access. SA news noted that the award places a South African researcher at the forefront of global efforts to fight deadly childhood diseases and pandemic threats, while Wits said the honour recognises Madhi's lasting contribution to vaccine research, public health and disease prevention. More than an individual achievement, the award is a powerful reminder that African science is not only responding to disease burden - it is helping lead the world in understanding how vaccines can save lives where they are needed most.
