South African Medical Aid Increases for 2027 Spark Affordability Concerns as Premiums Rise Above Inflation

Millions of South Africans could face increased financial pressure in 2027 as several of the country's largest medical schemes announce contribution increases well above projected inflation. According to healthcare industry reports, Bonitas has announced an average increase of 8.7%, followed by Discovery Health Medical Scheme at 8.2%, Momentum Medical Scheme at 7.9%, Medihelp at 7.5% and Bestmed at 7.35%. These increases are substantially higher than the 3.8% inflation benchmark recommended by the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS), raising concerns about the affordability of private healthcare. Medical schemes attribute the rising costs to increased hospital admissions, specialist fees, expensive medical technology and greater demand for chronic disease treatment. For a family currently paying R5,000 monthly, an 8% increase would mean an additional R400 each month, or R4,800 annually. Healthcare analysts warn that continued above-inflation increases could force households to downgrade their cover or reconsider their medical scheme membership. However, the announced figures are scheme-wide averages, and individual members may face higher or lower increases depending on their benefit options. Some schemes are also introducing more affordable plans to improve accessibility. With the proposed changes expected to take effect on 1 January 2027, subject to regulatory approval, members are being encouraged to compare benefits, contribution levels and out-of-pocket expenses carefully before making their annual healthcare decisions.
