SONA: A Platform for Local Fashion and National Pride
The State of the Nation Address (SONA) is often viewed as a significant event on the South African calendar, where politicians are expected to present themselves at their best. While some may argue that fashion is not a priority, SONA has evolved into an unspoken runway where fashion, identity, and national pride intersect.

This year, Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane, chairperson of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), encouraged attendees to wear clothing produced in South Africa to support the local fashion industry. According to her, the campaign “Wear Local at SONA” aims to elevate the local fashion sector by urging leaders to showcase South African-designed and manufactured attire.

The importance of this initiative extends beyond aesthetics; fashion is a billion-rand industry that employs thousands and serves as a cultural touchstone. The red carpet outside Parliament provides an opportunity to highlight South Africa's fashion economy, showcasing everything from heritage-inspired couture to contemporary designs.

As a major red carpet event, SONA allows designers to gain exposure to large audiences, making it essential for dignitaries to acknowledge the creators of their outfits. According to Proudly SA, it is vital for the local fashion industry that dignitaries wear clothing made by both established and emerging local designers, as this provides them with a platform to showcase their work.

Eustace Mashibye, CEO of Proudly SA, emphasized the importance of the “buy local” mandate, stating that retaining and creating jobs is crucial for reducing poverty and social issues. He urged members of Parliament and guests to not only wear local at SONA but to incorporate local fashion into their daily lives.

Nearly 2,000 guests from various sectors, including civil society, academia, and cultural groups, are expected to attend the SONA at Cape Town City Hall. Dignitaries will include former presidents, deputy presidents, and members of the European Union, among others.
