Shingrix Arrival in South Africa Highlights the Gap Between Vaccine Innovation and Affordability

South Africa is expected to see the private-sector launch of Shingrix, GSK's highly effective shingles vaccine, by the end of June 2026, marking an important step forward for adults at risk of shingles and its painful complications. Shingles, caused by reactivation of the chickenpox virus, can lead to a blistering rash, severe nerve pain and long-term post-herpetic neuralgia, especially in older adults and people with weakened immune systems. Spotlight reported that Shingrix has been registered by SAHPRA and is expected to become available privately, but access may be limited by cost, with a listed price of about R2 783 per dose and the vaccine requiring two doses for full protection. This is a major improvement from earlier Section 21 access, where imported two-dose courses were reported to cost around R15 600, but it may still remain unaffordable for many South Africans without strong medical-aid cover or public-sector availability. The launch therefore tells two stories at once: South Africa is gaining access to a modern vaccine that can reduce the burden of a painful preventable disease, but the people most likely to benefit may still be left behind unless pricing, reimbursement and wider rollout are addressed.
