SAMRC and DFFE Partnership Turns Air Pollution Into a National Public-Health Priority

The South African Medical Research Council and the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment have signed a new Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen research, policy and public-health action on the impact of air pollution in South Africa. Announced on 5 July 2026, the agreement will bring environmental and health experts closer together through joint work on research, health-impact assessments, data sharing, air-quality monitoring, policy development and public-awareness initiatives. The partnership is important because air pollution is not only an environmental concern; it is linked to serious health risks including respiratory disease, cardiovascular disease, stroke, cancer and premature death, with communities near industrial areas, power-generation facilities, transport corridors and informal settlements often carrying the heaviest burden. By combining the DFFE's environmental-management role with the SAMRC's public-health and epidemiology expertise, the collaboration aims to generate stronger evidence for cleaner-air policies, better early-warning systems and targeted interventions that protect vulnerable communities during periods of poor air quality. The move also reflects a wider global concern, with WHO warning that low- and middle-income countries continue to face higher exposure to harmful air pollution and a greater disease burden. In practical terms, the MoU signals a shift toward treating clean air as a health right, not a luxury - and toward using science to prevent illness before polluted air becomes hospital admissions, chronic disease and early death.
