Researchers at UNC Health have developed a novel clinical measurement designed to detect subtle mucus and airway abnormalities long before patients experience symptoms of chronic lung conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma, offering the potential for earlier diagnosis and intervention; the new metric evaluates how effectively mucus clears from the airways and how airway surfaces function at a microscopic level, allowing clinicians to identify early dysfunction that can precede inflammation, airflow limitation and long term respiratory damage, with scientists suggesting that earlier detection could lead to preventive treatments, improved monitoring and better long term outcomes for millions of people at risk of progressive lung disease.
